House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was met with applause on the floor of Congress after returning to work for the first time today since being shot during a congressional baseball game practice.

Scalise “will participate in this morning’s vote series and address his colleagues on the House floor in his first public appearance since the shooting,” his office said in a statement.

Scalise has been recovering for more than three months after sustaining gunshot wounds during the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, on June 14.

“I’m back,” Scalise tweeted this morning, along with a photo.

The Louisiana Congressman told CBS’s “60 Minutes” there was “a lot of damage inside that had to get fixed.”

“I found out later just how much damage was done internally. You know, I mean, my femur was shattered. The hip and pelvis had serious damage where the bullet went through and, you know, did some damage to areas that had to be shored up with steel plates and then they did a phenomenal job of rebuilding, you know, kind of, rebuilding Humpty Dumpty,” Scalise said in the interview, which will air in full Sunday.

Scalise and several other Republican lawmakers were practicing for an annual congressional charity baseball game early in the morning on June 14 when a lone gunman opened fire . Scalise was hit in the hip and taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he underwent surgery. Four others, including two U.S. Capitol police officers on duty, were also injured.

The gunman, later identified as James T. Hodgkinson, died from injuries he sustained in a shootout with police.

Scalise was discharged from the hospital in July six weeks after the shooting but still had to undergo “intensive inpatient rehabilitation,” according to the hospital.
