How do I get a telephone and Internet access?
There are two main types of telephone services in Canada: fixed-line or land-line telephones and
cellphones or mobile telephones. Canadian telephone numbers usually have ten digits. The first
three digits are the “area code” and the seven last digits are the number itself. Area codes in
Canada have three digits assigned to each region. Most public libraries provide a telephone book
with further instructions on making telephone calls. You can get a fixed line and a mobile line
service almost anywhere in Canada from a private company in your area. Companies can provide
special services for people with disabilities.
Companies and government bodies have automatic answering systems that give you recorded
instructions on how to get the information you need.
Public telephone services are available in many Canadian towns and cities by using a calling card
or by inserting coins into a phone booth, though there are fewer phone booths as cell phones are
far more common now.
Internet services are available for free use at public libraries. Paid Internet services are available at
Internet cafés. Telephone and cable companies offer Internet plans for home computer users.
