The Florida Keys are a year-round destination with opportunities for cycling, walking, running, swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating, scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing.
Key West’s Old Town is most well-known. But Stacey Pillari, a realtor at Coldwell Banker Schmitt Real Estate Co. in Key West, says there are other neighborhoods that have homes for those who want to buy vacation properties.
Homes in Truman Annex and Casa Marina are sought-after for their aesthetic appeal, charm, and location, she says.
Key Haven is popular because it is close to Key West, but away from the traffic and much quieter. While Key West has relatively few waterfront homes, most homes in Key Haven are on canals or open water, she says.
Sugarloaf Key is a more rural option and only a 20-minute drive from Key West. Sugarloaf Boulevard is the main drag and has a path for walking, running and cycling.
Big Pine Key is low-key and has the popular key deer roaming around.
Homes in those communities range from the $600,000 range to the millions, Pillar says.
But anywhere in the Keys is generally a good investment for a second home, she says.
“The Keys has it all, from great nightlife to great daytime activities,” Pillar says. “We leave the fast pace hustle and bustle behind to enjoy island life with all its luxuries.”
The law is also lenient toward second-home buyers. Prospective owners can apply for a transient license and rent the property when they are not around.
“You can rent a beautiful home on the water for your entire family in the adjacent Lower Keys area yet still drive to Key West for an afternoon or evening in no time,” she says. “The rentals here bring top dollar, whether a short-term vacation rental or even a longer-term rental, making ownership a solid investment if you’re not able to occupy the home personally.”
