Another month, another new crop of TV shows and movies on your streaming services.
Now that September has kicked into gear, it’s the perfect opportunity to peruse the new offerings on Netflix, Amazon and Hulu (and others) and check out new shows and movies that are available. We picked five shows and movies for you this weekend, some that are just available, some that will help you prep for fall TV and all that will get you completely hooked.
If you want to catch up before fall TV kicks in: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’
The police precinct-set sitcom had a rocky ride this spring. After Fox cut the series after six seasons, NBC picked it up. It’s high profile cancellation and rescue are the perfect excuse for you to catch up on the delectable comedy, which was created by alums of “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” You’ll be hard-pressed to find a funnier show on TV right now, and its most recent season is available to stream in full.

If you are willing to take a risk on your baking inspiration: ‘The Great British Baking Show’
Normally “The Great British Baking Show” is one of our very favorites and we’d reccommend any season of the British classic, but for the first time a slightly different version of the show is available in the U.S. Hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc and judge Mary Berry departed the show after its seventh season in the U.K., and the first season without them is now available on Netflix. It’s the same format, same tent and same sweet crop of contestants, but with slightly different jokes.

If you’re looking for something thrilling: ‘The Night Manager’
Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman anchored AMC’s 2016 miniseries adaptation of the John Le Carre novel, and the network is going back to the Le Carre well again this year with “The Little Drummer Girl” in November. To prep for that spy caper, try your hand at this one, in which a hotel manager is pulled into the world of international espionage and undercover work after he helps a guest involved in the weapons trade.

If you want a reliable cop show: ‘The Closer’
TNT’s long-running procedural had a near-perfect balance of its murder-of-the-week stories and the longer running ones about its lead, Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick). Although it has a troubling depiction of unethical (and probably illegal) practices by Brenda, the characters are relatable, the mysteries are wrapped up with a bow each episode and the acting is superb (don’t forget, J.K. Simmons was in this). Start with Season 2, and avoid the annoying Season 1 storylines where Brenda’s subordinates resent her. The show is much better when the team operates like a family. If you want more, try the spin-off, “Major Crimes,” which has a more even hand when it comes to depicting its cases.

If you somehow missed the biggest movie of the year: ‘Black Panther’
The Oscars may be trying to get in on the “Black Panther” love with its new “blockbuster” category, but you can celebrate the groundbreaking superhero film from the comfort of you own couch. The Marvel epic is one of the few movies that lives up to the hype (or even surpasses it), and to miss it is to miss out on a cultural moment.
