‘Pose’ actors and writers on superheroes and the Johansson controversy

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The actors and writers of FX’s “Pose” are celebrating the first season of their groundbreaking show, which features the largest LGBTQ cast for a series, but Hollywood is still working on transgender representation.

While discussing the show at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday, the cast and writers of “Pose,” which include several transgender women, were asked about recent successes and controversy about trans people in Hollywood, including “Supergirl” adding a transgender actress (Nicole Maines) as a superhero and the controversy around Scarlett Johansson’s casting as a transgender man (she subsequently dropped out of the production ).

“I was just so excited” about “Supergirl,” Indya Moore, who plays Angel on “Pose,” said. “Because what’s more important than any of us as actresses being in the roles we want to play is seeing roles played by people of different demographics.  (That) a trans woman was finally cast as a superhero was everything I wanted to see.”

But writer and trans activist Janet Mock was less celebratory about the Johansson controversy.

Mock said she hasn’t read the script for “Rub and Tug,” the film Johansson planned to star in, but “Pose” proves that “a series can cast five trans women playing trans women. … Our show proved that trans people can play trans people on screen and you don’t need a star name (for success).”

Mock also noted that while Hollywood often casts cisgender people to play transgender roles, the opposite happens rarely, if ever.

“If cis people can play trans folk I think that it should happen vice versa,” she said.
